Layers
Each canvas has its own Layer List, allowing you to structure content within that canvas. While canvases can be positioned in different 3D planes, all of their layers exist within the same 2D plane. This distinction lets you create complex layered drawings while keeping a clear separation of elements in space.
In the scene below, the boat is a single canvas with two layers – a foreground and a background.

Expanding the Layer List
Just like the Canvas List and the Bookmarks List, the Layer List has 3 states - collapsed, open and expanded.
If you drag the menu handle all the way to the right, you’ll see the Expanded View of the list. It shows you the name of each layer and reveals additional tools for managing your layers.
Layer Tools
- Hide All Layers : Hides all but the active layer.
- Show All Layers : Reveals all hidden layers.
- Layer Opacity: Adjust the transparency of the active layer using the opacity slider. Tap the opacity icon to access the slider.
- Merge Down: Combine the active layer with the layer below it, provided neither layer is locked, and both layers are of the same type (stroke or image).
- Add New Layer: Create a new layer at the top of the stack for additional content.
- Lock Layer: Temporarily lock a layer to prevent accidental editing or selection.
You can also control the visibility of individual layers by toggling the eye icon next to the layer name.
Layer Organization
A new blank canvas starts with two layers: Foreground and Background. The active layer is always highlighted in the list. Unlike canvases, where the order in the list is purely organizational, the order of layers in the Layer List determines how they appear within the canvas, affecting their visibility and stacking.
Canvases and Layers in Mental Canvas work differently from Folders and Layers in traditional creative software. Canvases are positioned independently in 3D space, while layers are confined to a single canvas. Layers cannot be transferred between canvases.
